UAS001

Basic Flight Training

This course provides a basic understanding of UAS operation, and UAS technologies, with an emphasis on practical flight training.

Topics covered include:
  • Multirotor flight theory;
  • Control – Mode 1-2, FHSS, antenna orientation;
  • Basic UAS Airmanship;
  • Preflight Inspections;
  • Flight Modes - Description and how to use them operationally;
  • IMUs, Barometers, Magnetometers, GPS, Sonar & Optical Positioning;
  • Calibration of IMUs and Magnetometers;
  • Vibration;
  • Stable hover, ascending and descending;
  • Yawing;
  • Coordinated turns;
  • Figure 8s;
  • Orientation; and
  • Spot landing figure 8 course.

UAS002

UAS Aviation Law

This course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the civil aviation rules that apply to UAS.

This course provides the aviation knowledge required for the UAS Pilot Certificate.

Topics covered include:
  • Part 101 General UAS Rules, including height limitations, shielded operations, Part 12 responsibilities and reporting;
  • Hazard and Risk Minimisation, including the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, the Swiss Cheese Model of system failures, potential hazards for UAS operations;
  • Operation at or near aerodromes;
  • Navigational Charts and Airspace;
  • Obtaining and understanding NOTAMs; and
  • Part 102 Certificated UAS Operations, including the importance and role of the operations specifications issued by CAA, the exposition, and additional Part 12 reporting requirements.

A written examination is held at the end of the course.

UAS003

UAS Flight Competency Assessment

This course is comprised solely of an assessment of the student’s practical flying skills. A pass in this course is required to obtain the UAS Pilot Certificate.

The majority of the flight test is conducted in ATTI mode. The purpose of the test is to assess competence to fly within 4km of an aerodrome and to conduct Part 102 operations. Flight operations may involve flight in environments where GPS is unavailable. The candidate must also be able to demonstrate the ability to competently fly their UAS should an emergency arise.

Topics assessed during the flight test are:
  • Flight planning;
  • Battery management;
  • Knowledge of multirotor components;
  • Knowledge of the flight controller;
  • Failsafe functions;
  • Pre-flight checks;
  • Manual flight skills:
    • Takeoff and landing;
    • Switch between flight modes, and demonstrate differences and applications when they would be used;
    • Fly in control in four quarters of orientation;
    • Speed descent (dropping out of the sky);
    • Known failure recognition and reaction.

It is recommended that candidates practice their manual skills prior to undertaking this assessment. Those with low flying time may also benefit from the instruction provided in UAS001, which included instruction in the flying manoeuvres covered in this assessment.

UAS004

UAS Operational Competency Assessment

The operational competency assessment is repeated every 12 months for pilots flying for a Part 102 certificated organisation.

The operational competency assessment covers the same areas as the UAS003 Flight Competency Assessment with the addition of:
  • Automated flight planning and execution;
  • Additional procedures required by the operator’s exposition;
  • Operations specifications;
  • Part 12 reporting requirements;
